Periwinkle, by Color Condition, is the latest colorful art installation to be revealed by Weingarten Art Group in the Houston-area. The opening celebration was held March 9 at City Place in Spring, where colorful streamers of various materials make a giant X over the streets, create a mesmerizing canopy over City Place Plaza, adorn light poles and skirt the bridge over the lake.

I was tasked with photographing the art with and without people interacting with the installation. The weather was not ideal earlier in the morning, but since the timeline was planned around the grand opening activities, I had to make do with the atmosphere available. Thankfully, we had a small window of blue sky toward the end of my shooting window. And there was a surprisingly great turnout too, even with the gloomy clouds. All ages were enthralled with the streamers blowing in the wind, adding bright colors to the green space.

When Weingarten, a new client of mine, pitched the idea, I was really excited for the opportunity. I remember visiting Discovery Green back in 2017 when Color Condition had an install there, and I loved the colorful work. This is a favorite environmental portrait of mine made at that install: Jessica Navarro, editor’s portrait, for the University of Houston’s Inside Bauer Magazine.
